* Check out privacy statements: Good companies are likely to have privacy statements on their websites, which explain what they do with the information they have about you and what they do with the information. As well, these companies will allow you to say whether or not you want your information passed on to other companies.

* Check the security of payment details: Many companies allow you to send your credit card details via a secure page and you should buy from companies that give you this choice.

* You may have some extra protection if paying by credit card: If you have a claim against the seller for breach of contract or misrepresentation you may also have a claim against your card issuer. You do not have the same protection if you use debit or charge card.

* Your card can be used fraudulently on the Internet without your permission, and you should be able to cancel the payment and have your account re-credited in full.
